One way to combat the off-season blues - watching people play Madden

I recently upgraded to a bit of High Definition (HD) Sky TV, meaning better clarity for sports events, and stunning detail on some cool shows such as Lost and 24.

Whilst HD is not the greatest thing since sliced bread, getting it on Sky does mean a few extra channels that I had never watched (or even heard of).

One of the new HD channels I can now get is Rush HD (Sky Channel 452), a mix of extreme sports and computer game shows, including would you believe a whole 1 hour show a week devoted to the NFL Madden game.

Pubescent boys and young men looking like wannabe gangstas are pitted against each other to see who has the best XBOX 360 Madden skills.

The show airing at 11pm on a Friday night is certainly one for the Sky+ recording system, but as a fun thing to watch on a lazy Saturday morning/afternoon it can’t be beat.

The Madden Challenge is unfortunately using the Madden 2008 game, so most of the competitors, who had won regional heats across America to qualify for the televised stages, are either the New England Patriots (Randy Moss is scarily good on that version) or the San Diego Chargers (with a fully fit Ladanian Tomlinson and Cromartie at his career peak).

The host wears some pretty nasty shirts, which remind me of the ones Will Smith wore when he was in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and the show has two fully grown men wearing those giant black headphones that commentators have when they are broadcasting live from a packed out stadium.

The young men competing are a mix of geeks and cocksure jocks, but watching the action is entertaining. The rules are not fully explained, but there is a mercy rule that if you have a lead of over 28 points I think you automatically win.

Above all it is a bit of a healthy break from the next two months worth of draft speculation, which even for the most avid fan, will get a bit tiresome by the time we hear analysis on Division II long snapper prospects.

As it says in the title of this post – anyone else watching this?

It’s official I have the best wife in the world. I’ll now explain why.

For our one week road trip to Miami, which was going to be heavily sports dominated, I thought I would look for a non-sporting event for us both to go to, so I visited the Miami American Airlines Arena website to see if there were any concerts.

It was a miracle, between a sandwich of Disney on Ice was a lone The Killers concert on the Saturday night at 8.00pm. Perfect I thought, my wife loves The Killers, all that ‘somebody told me you had a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year’.

I did let my wife know that the Miami University v Oklahoma football game would be earlier that day at 1.00pm, but she did not mind, and despite my football excitement my wife told all her work mates she was seeing The Killers live in Miami – very cool.

It wasn’t until the night before we flew to Miami that I had an email from Ticketmaster saying that unfortunately the Miami U game had been moved from 1.00pm EST to 8.00pm EST because it was the nationally televised Saturday evening college game of the week.

Shit I thought. My wife however was that amazing that she sacrificed seeing The Killers to enable us to go and see Miami U v Oklahoma at Land Shark Stadium instead.

The worst part for my incredibly gracious wife was that the American Airlines Arena is situated right next to the carpark entrance to the Bayside area of Miami, the place you go to visit the Hardrock Cafe or catch a boat tour to see the likes of Vanilla Ice’s house or Will Smith’s luxury pad.

I think this is Will Smith's Miami pad - not bad eh!

We did collect The Killers tickets as souvineers, but the look on my wife’s face as she played a Killers tune from her mobile phone standing outside the Arena was enough to make a grown man cry.

Categoric proof that my wife is in fact the best wife in the world

I have promised my wife free tickets to see The Killers when they next come to the UK, but I guess it will never quite sound as cool as saying ‘I saw The Killers in Miami’.

Dearest wife I am forever in your debt for this and I love you for the sacrifice you made.

Is this kid a future Hall of Fame NFL QB?The news that a Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christianhigh school quarterback accepting an offer to become a Washington Huskie in 2010 is not something I would normally report on.

Wednesday’s news that this same QB declined an offer from the Fighting Irish Notre Dame would also seem somewhat inconsequential.

That this gun slinger is going into his senior high school season throwing passes to team mate WR Trey Smith, the son of Hollywood actor Will Smith (WR Trey Smith) AND  he is keeping backup QB Trevor Gretzky on the bench, the son of NHL ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky is bizarre enough.

This is where it truly goes ‘radio rentals’ (for all you non UK fans this is Cockney rhyming slang for mental) as the passer in question (seen left wearing the #5 shirt) is none other that the son of four time Superbowl winning quarterback Joe Montana – Mr Nick Montana.

Trust me you could not make this up. Don’t believe me – click here.

This would be the UK equivalent of Hugh Grant’s son (not that I think he even has one), David  Beckham’s son Romeo and Ian Botham’s son (English cricket legend) all playing for the same school Sixth-Form football team (soccer).

As Dizzy Rascal would say ‘BONKERS’.

Only in America! And this ladies and gentlemen is why I love our friends over the other side of the pond.

Anyone ALREADY getting excited about the 2014 NFL Draft (assuming that Montana Jnr does not apply for NFL draft eligibility as a junior) ?
